Granite is a completely natural indigenous rock, it is quarried from the ground in huge blocks before being cut into large slabs. One side is then polished, making it ready for use. Because granite is a natural material, the patterns and the colours can vary from one piece to another. This helps to give it more random veining and uneven colour patterns, which can be especially noticeable in lighter colours. Quartz, on the other hand, is a man-made material that is produced using around 93% of natural quartz. This natural quartz is crushed to a fine powder, it is then mixed with around 7% of a resin based composite to form quartz slabs. Quartz has a look that is similar to granite, but due to the manufacturing nature, it is more uniform in both its patterns and its toning – ideal for those who want a more subtle shade.

When it comes to maintenance, quartz is very easy to keep looking great – so easy, in fact, that it is almost maintenance free – it should just require wiping down to keep it looking great. Granite, on the other hand, does require a little more maintenance to keep it looking its best. It is recommended that you have your granite resealed every 6-12 months, but it is eminently worth it, as, with the correct maintenance, granite should last an extremely long time.
